The competition was judged by Helen Taylor ARPS DPAGB BPE3* on 23rd April 2008. In her introduction, Helen explained what kinds of things she was looking for in the judging including technique, sharpness, but more importantly what kind of connection the photographer had with the sitter. She wanted that connection to come across in the print/slide and to learn a little about the sitter.

The portraits included works that were closely cropped, people at work, staged models, monochrome and colour photographs, among others.

Helen focused on particular points that she would avoid when photographing portraits including avoiding jewellery and other distracting items on models, such as hands. Trying to obtain just one highlight in each eye, if possible, was another point she touched on. She spoke about the use of lighting and the effects of having very light patches within the photograph that might draw the eye away from the subject. She went on to say that there can be problems when working outside as the light is often out of our control but where we can control the lighting situation we must.

Attention to detail including the mount colour and the hues within the overall print were also considered.

The night was extremely informative and amusing which was thanks mostly to Helen’s unique style.

The chairman, Graham, rounded off the evening thanking Helen for her tips on portrait photography.  Results to follow.

Today Paul Andrew selected the ‘Best in Exhibition’ at the 2008 Annual Exhibition being held in Deal Library. If you have not visited I would urge to go along to take a look at this diverse collection of photographs and choose your own favourite.

Paul selected a deceptively simple but very carefully constructed strong graphic image of a floating paper clip called “Surface Tension” by Sarah Smith.

Paul also gave a highly commended to “Tulips” by Nigel May.

If you would like to find more about Paul and his work you could check out his website:

As most of you will know, our Annual Print Exhibition at Deal Library starts on Monday the 7th April and continues until Friday 2nd May 2008. This year Paul Andrew will be judging the exhibition.

It was great to see such a wide spectrum of pictures of all standards and styles. The exhibition gives everyone in the club a chance to show some of their work to a wider audience.

Do encourage friends, family and acquaintances to visit as it helps to spread the word. The exhibition is a perfect opportunity for those interested in finding out more about the club.

A big thank you goes to all those involved in creating and promoting the exhibition and of course everyone for submitting work.

As a reminder the EKM photographer will be along at 15:00 on Tuesday 8th April, so do drop in with a camera or print if you want to appear in the photo.
